During 1975-1997  I filled the post of  Clinical Director of the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory and Consultancy Service.
 
I am currently Professor of Medical Genetics at Warwick University. where I initiated the introduction of Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and CF-PCR for the diagnosis of chromosome disorders into the Clinical Service (Hulten et al J Med Genet 1991, 28:577-582; Verma et al Lancet 1998, 352:9-12; Grimshaw et al 2003, 7:1-156),
 
 
I was part of the establishment of  DNA banks and European Consortia for families affected by the ICF and Rett Syndromes (Xu et al 1999, Nature 402; 187-91; Cheadle et al 2000 Hum Mol Genet 9:1119-29; Vacca et al 2001 J Mol Med 78:648-55).
 
I am also chair of the standing Workshop Research In the Service Environment (RISE) of the European Cytogenetics Association (ECA) and the coordinator of the Special Non-Invasive Advances in Foetal and Neonatal Evaluation (SAFE) NoE (EC contract No 503343).
 
My research group at Warwick is most famous internationally for studies on patterns of meiotic recombination in human males and females, using novel technology.

In 1996 I formed the company SIMEG Ltd (Registered Number 03146236) to put the development of various products arising from my academic research onto a business managed basis.
